This study investigates the effects of Animal-Assisted Treatments (AATx) on brain signal complexity in patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS), focusing on entropy measures derived from EEG signals. Using a cross-over randomized controlled trial, 26 patients will undergo four sessions, alternating between AATx and standard occupational therapy (SOT). EEG measures will include Sample Entropy, Lempel-Ziv Complexity, and Symbolic Transfer Entropy, capturing different dimensions of brain signal complexity. Higher values of complexity are expected when and after AATx sessions compared to SOT sessions. As secondary measures heart rate, heart rate variability, and electrodermal activity will be recorded together a behavioral measure of consciousness. Higher values of secondary measures are expected when and after AATx sessions compared to SOT sessions. The study aims to evaluate the potential effects of AATx on brain entropy of MCS patients in early neurorehabilitation.
